What is Micro-Needling?

SkinPen is a brand name for the device that makes micro-needling or collagen induction therapy happen. The micro-needling process stimulates your skin’s natural ability to repair itself.  Results come with little or no downtime.  Use of the SkinPen is extremely versatile and can be used on all parts of the body, face, neck, decolletage, arms, hands, legs, abdomen, and back.  It treats fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, pores, hyper-pigmentation, stretch marks and skin texture.  It is equally versatile in the range in which the depth that the needles can be adjusted, from 0.25mm up to 2.5 mm in length.  Best collagen formation happens at least a 1.0 depth.  The needles are disposable so there is no risk of cross-contamination.  It can be done on any skin type or color.  Many consider the micro-needling process an alternative to expensive laser treatments or harsh chemical peels.

How SkinPen Micro-Needling Works

The SkinPen treatment temporarily creates thousands of microchannels which allow for increased product absorption.  Usually, vitamin C, Retin-A or lightening products are used in the treatment.  I compare this to aerating a lawn and applying fertilizer. These micro-channels stimulate fibroblasts and are responsible for new collagen and elastin growth.  It is a great way to tighten sagging skin.  Micro-needling is a non-ablative treatment, meaning that the deeper parts of the skin are treated without removing the top layer of skin.  A single treatment can provide noticeable results, especially with the skin texture.  A series of two to three treatments spread four to six weeks apart is recommended to achieve optimal results.  The downtime is 12 to 24 hours of sunburn-like skin.  The procedure itself is not painful but the skin will feel warm and tight.
